Mike Greenberg knows "What Women Want"...plus a book giveaway
Today is the first day of our favorite month of the year....International Chick Lit Month! And who better to help us kick it off than a man?!? Well, Mike Greenberg may be all about sports in his career, but he just wrote a novel that proves he knows EXACTLY what women want to read. According to Amy Bromberg's review of his debut novel, All You Could Ask For, he definitely hits that nail on the head! (Not to make it sound all manly with tools, but you catch our drift.) His novel has even been endorsed by Jane Green!
Mike Greenberg, best known for his work on the ESPN Radio show Mike & Mike in the Morning, currently works as an anchor and radio host for ESPN. Greenberg graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 1989. He was a reporter and talk show host for a radio station from 1992 to 1996. From 1994-95, he was a reporter for SportsChannel Chicago. He also wrote a weekly column from 1993-1995 for the Californian Copley News Service. He is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a native of New York City. He lives with his wife, Stacy, and their two children in Connecticut.
We're doing a special theme for ICLM...Chick Lit Goes to the Movies. We've invited all authors visiting Chick Lit Central this month to tell us either the cast or the soundtrack for their novel. Mike is sharing his soundtrack with us today. Thanks to HarperCollins, we have THREE copies of All You Could Ask For for some lucky US readers.
You can find Mike at his website and on Twitter.
RAISE YOUR GLASS, P!nk
The underlying lesson each of the women learns is that she does not have to explain or justify her decisions to anyone but herself. This could be their anthem. "Raise your glass if you are wrong in all the right ways."
STRONGER, Kelly Clarkson
There is a spiritual awakening that each of the women in the novel undergoes as a result of the shared adversity they face. As they lift themselves above it, individually and collectively, what they discover is that, in some ways, their struggles are the best things that ever happened to them. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller, doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone."
IT'S TIME, Imagine Dragons
Samantha begins her life over again in the early stages of the book, coming to the realization that between her father and her husband she has always capitulated, and now: "It's time to begin, isn't it. I get a little bit bigger but then I'll admit I'm just the same as I was, now don't you understand that I'm never changing who I am."
GIVES YOU HELL, The All-American Rejects
One of the characters in the novel spends her life dreaming of the day she finally has her revenge on the man who broke her heart. Daily, she envisions him crawling back to her on his knees. "When you see my face, hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell."
THE EDGE OF GLORY, Lady Gaga
The theme of the entire novel is the spiritual awakening of the three main characters, from the first page they are each searching for something that feels as though it is right before them but still somehow impossible to reach. "I'm on the edge of glory, and I'm hanging on a moment of truth."
Thanks to Mike for sharing his song list with us (and ensuring these songs play in an endless loop in our heads all day...) and HarperCollins for sharing his novel with our readers.
