Book Review: What Have You Done for Mia Lately?

By Melissa Smoot

I was excited to read this story because like so many, I have had the misfortune of a toxic boss. The ridiculous requests, the building up only to tear you down, and the constant after hours texts and phone calls with outrageous demands.

Flynn gives us the story of the main character, Kat, who works as a government prosecutor. While working on a case, she runs into an old law school acquaintance, Mia, who woos her into coming to work in the private sector at a fancy Manhattan firm. At first, Kat can’t believe her luck. The pay is better, there are more perks, and she will get to do a lot of pro bono work, which she is passionate about. But after many months, her new boss and mentor, Mia, starts to use and abuse Kat. She calls and texts her at all hours of the day and night, she puts down her writing abilities, and starts to gaslight her.

I was on the edge of my seat, reading this. It took me a while to get into it because it was a very uncorrected proof, but once I got past that, I couldn’t stop reading. I will say that I was a bit triggered at times by some of the things Mia said and did to Kat. She was awful and I brought me back to some of my darkest career days, working for someone just like Mia.

If you are looking for a great read about overcoming the effects of a toxic work environment and the underdog becoming the victor, then What Have You Done for Mia Lately? is for you!

Thanks to Julia Flynn for the book in exchange for an honest review.
