Book Review: Fool Me Twice at Christmas...plus a special giveaway

By Sara Steven

Chuck and Kate’s used to be real, oh-so-real. But after she broke his heart four months ago, leaving him, it became all just pretense for the sake of their entwined families.

With parents who are best friends and business partners, it’s not easy for Chuck and Kate to announce they’ve split up. But with the holidays looming over them, they can no longer keep pretending.

They head home for Christmas, determined to tell the truth—and end up accidentally engaged instead. The more they try to pull apart, the more the Universe seems to push them back together, shortening the road to the altar. And when just-for-show kisses stir up forgotten feelings, things get even more complicated.

Now, with the midnight hour approaching, will Chuck and Kate’s relationship turn out to be fake or real? (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads)

This felt like a classic rom com wrapped up within a sparkly holiday bow! I loved how the stakes kept getting higher and higher for Chuck and Kate, all starting with an engagement that was never meant to be. Considering they’d broken up months before the big trip home, and that Kate might have someone else waiting in the wings, it added even more to the chaos and confusion.

Fool Me Twice at Christmas is told from both Kate and Chuck’s perspectives, which turned out to be a really great way to have the characters not only showcase who they are, but how they view each other. From the very first chapter, it was apparent that Chuck saw Kate as a bit high maintenance and hard to please, while Kate saw Chuck as someone who was lazy and didn’t want to go beyond his small-town roots and expand his horizons. The reader gets to determine whether those characteristics really fit or not, and it’s just so funny that despite the supposed flaws, there is still a very strong connection there.

All of the family members lend a hand in bringing these two closer together, even if it is against their will. While there may have been moments where I felt a bit annoyed at how pushy both sets of parents could be at times, I wanted to see how Chuck and Kate would handle it. One of my favorite scenes involves a girl scout’s group, and I know it sounds a little out of place within this story, but trust me, it was a great part. There were many great parts to Fool Me Twice at Christmas, the perfect holiday read that gets you in the mood for family, misplaced romance, and faith that things will happen the way they should. It was a definite five-star read!
