A friendly drink with Kim Gruenenfelder...plus a book giveaway

Kim Gruenenfelder is back at CLC once again during wintertime, to share a new holiday treat with us. (And no, it's not the drink she's carrying.) You may remember her when she shared There's Cake in My Future (reviewed here) back in 2010. We've had to wait THREE years for her to present the sequel, Keep Calm and Carry a Big Drink (reviewed by Book Mama).

Thanks to St. Martin's Press, we have TWO copies of Keep Calm... for some lucky US readers. And that's not all. We also have some swag for a lucky US reader. And it gets even better...Book Mama has two more copies of Keep Calm... for some lucky US readers, as well!

You can find Kim at her website, Facebook and Twitter.

How did you decide to write chick lit in the first place?
By accident. I have got to be the only accidental novelist I’ve ever heard of. I wrote my first book, A Total Waste of Makeup, for my great-granddaughter to read. I was hoping she would think it was funny. Then it sold, and suddenly I had a new career.

What is the best feedback you've received on any of your novels?
I got a fan email once that still makes me happy. A woman wrote to me a few months after a hideous breakup. She wrote that at the time of the breakup, she wasn’t suicidal exactly, but had wanted to be dead. So she went to the bookstore for something self help, and wound up finding my book instead. There was a particular scene I wrote that helped her, because it reminded her that we’ve all gone through the Hell of breakups, and we all eventually come out of it, and I guess it inspired her to go to therapy and start healing. I never thought something I wrote could have touched someone that much. I kept the email.
I also love getting mail from other parts of the world. I have wonderful fans from Turkey. I must have an amazing translator for the books there, as I speak not a word of Turkish.

Are any of your characters based on yourself?
Charlie, the main character from A Total Waste of Makeup and Misery Loves Cabernet, was pretty much me at 29. You know how James Frey lied and made up a whole memoir, claiming it was true? I did the opposite: I wrote about my life, and called it fiction.
There’s Cake in my Future and Keep Calm and Carry a Big Drink don’t really have a character based on me, although there are elements to Seema, Nic and Mel that I relate to.

If There's Cake... and Keep Calm... were made into a movie or TV series, who would you cast as Nic, Mel and Seema?
Movies and TV are totally different casting choices, so let’s go with with movies. For Seema, I used to see saw Freida Pinto as the ideal. But then I got into The Mindy Project and developed a girlcrush on Mindy Kaling. Mila Kunis would be so fun for Mel. And Kristen Bell for Nic. Of course, this is completely off the top of my head – you could put Kaley Cuoco in there, and she would give that role a totally different flavor.

What is your "big drink" of choice?
As tempted as I am to say champagne, since I start my day with coffee (and frequently finish my day with coffee), I would have to say that. I’m one of the first customers in line the day Starbucks Christmas Blend comes out. A Blue Bottle Espresso Roast (from the Bay area) makes my heart go pitter pat.
I remember being worried about how hard it would be to quit drinking alcohol when I was pregnant. That wasn’t a problem at all – most people don’t start their day with a glass of wine. But man, quitting caffeine was tough! I couldn’t walk past a coffeehouse without wanting to press my nose against the glass.

What TV show were you too young to appreciate in the past but would totally watch if it were around now?
The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was too young when it first aired, but I loved it in my 20s!

What is the best party you ever hosted or attended?
My wedding. We got married in Malibu in a five minute ceremony by the beach, with the ocean waves breaking right behind us. Then we followed that up with a reception in the same restaurant, so no one had to drive. The theme was “Don’t stress.” And for the most part, we did not. The bar was open before we did our vows. The minister was a mutual friend. The dance floor was filled from song one. The food was amazing. It was perfect.

What is your favorite way to escape?
I have two answers for this, depending on the season. In Fall and Winter, I love to go to the beach and walk. We’re so spoiled in Los Angeles: if the temperature falls below 70, the beaches are pretty much abandoned. If it’s raining ever so slightly, all the better, then it’s just me. A cocoa makes it perfect.
In Spring and Summer, I love sitting in my living room, watching sitcom reruns. My favorites are Will & Grace, Frasier, Mad About You and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Thanks to Kim for chatting with us and to St. Martin's Press for sharing her book with our readers.

Book Review: Fifty Million Reasons

By Gail Allison

What would you do if you won the lottery? Seriously, if you were instantly fifty million dollars richer, what would you do? Would it change who you are? Would it change the little things that you do every day? Would it change the way you treat people? Would it change the way they treat you? How would you know who your friends really are if you were suddenly a multi-millionaire?

In Fifty Million Reasons, Heather Wardell deftly answers all these questions through Angela, her protagonist. Angela has bought a lottery ticket every week without fail. She is a wonderful, giving person who tries to go out of her way to make life a little better for everyone around her. So when she actually wins the fifty million dollar jackpot one day (the full fifty million…she wins in Canada, where there’s no tax on lottery winnings) her first instinct is to take care of everyone around her. She is confident she knows who her friends are, but what she doesn’t count on is the influx of attention from everyone around her, right down to complete strangers. Angela wants so badly to help the people she cares most about, but her real friends convince her to take care of herself first and foremost. She puts her trust in her best friend John’s ex-wife, who (he assures her) is an excellent financial advisor. As she learns more about the people around her and sees how the money has changed how they see her and treat her, will she be strong enough to stick to her convictions and do what she thinks is right?

Fifty Million Reasons hits the mark on so many levels. It's one of those rare books that pulls you in and makes you feel like you're a part of the story, while working the other way: trickling out into real life and forcing you to have those "what if..." thoughts. The characters are real people, with multiple dimensions. As all the characters metamorphose through this earth-shattering change in Angela’s life, their voices in the story line become more or less pronounced according to their bond with Angela, which I found very interesting. It is well-written, the characters are nicely layered, and it’s set in Canada (bonus!). This book sparkles with a fun story line and just the right amount of introspection. Angela is a multi-dimensional character, and the layers that this book moves through with not only the main character, but with multiple characters make it real and completely engaging. It made me wonder what I would do, and how I would change if something like that were to happen. I find the very best books make you wonder about the characters and situations after they’ve finished, and this one was no different.

Ms. Wardell has a definite winner here, and imagine my glee at learning she has thirteen other novels available! It was like hitting my own personal jackpot. Time to update the Christmas list…

Thanks to Heather Wardell for the book in exchange for an honest review.

Book (Mama) Review: The Debt and the Doormat

By Marlene Engel

Poppy has been living alone for the past year, but when she discovers that her best friend, Jazz, is in debt they decide to switch lives for a bit. Jazz will move into Poppy’s place, lay low from her partying ways and try to put some money away. And Poppy will stay in Jazz’s house, with her roommates, and live a carefree, partying lifestyle. This will be a stretch for Poppy who has not only lived alone since her breakup, but is also a bit of a recluse.

Poppy and her new roommates couldn’t be any more different, but it’s the one roommate, Ryan, that throws Poppy for a loop. Moody, grumpy, but gorgeous, Ryan and Poppy do have potential for some sparks. But just when you think they might get together, there’s always something to deflate the possibility.

The Debt & The Doormat is a fun, funny, unpredictable book. One minute you’ll think something’s going to happen and then in a flash it changes. I love funny books and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. The characters had me in stitches and the story held my attention from the beginning. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves chick lit!

Go-To-Gay: Don’t Charge, Re-Charge!

Introduction by Tracey Meyers

This year, the last weekend in November kicked-off a whirlwind of event after event celebrating occasion after occasion. Hanukkah, Thanksgiving and my birthday.  Yes, a great trifecta of three wonderful occasions that rarely ever occur at the same time all converged this year during one long weekend.

Of course, I spent the weekend celebrating these occasions, but at the same time it was exhausting.  However, the celebration didn't stop there!  Nope, the party is still going.  Though it's all fun and I am making many wonderful memories, quite honestly all of this has been somewhat exhausting and really forced me to focus on taking care of myself by making sure I am resting enough AND making sure that I am celebrating these occasions in a way that makes me happy.

Today, Gary Edwards, Chick Lit Central's co-Go-To-Gay, shares some of his tips for making the holidays "merry and bright" while still focusing on ourselves.

Don’t Charge, Re-Charge!

As Carol Anne from Poltergeist said, “They’re Here”, and we are smack dab in the middle of them! Thanksgiving, Hanukah just passing us, soon Christmas and New Year’s. Every year I hear and see the stress this time of year brings to family and friends. Trying to recreate a tradition or memory, or to our own crazy expectations of creating the perfect holiday party! What if we all gave ourselves the gift this season of not having expectations? Keeping it simple and remembering why we love the people that we have in our lives. Take care of yourself this year during the holidays and take time for you! In a 5 week period it will all be over and we are back to our routine. If you don’t take time to fill your soul and be happy yourself you will have nothing to give and share with others! So go ahead and put the oxygen mask over your head first and then assist others this Holiday season.

Follow some simple rules:

Gifts – Let’s face it, most of us either buy what we want or if it is something we really need it may be a big ticket item like a new washer. Come on, we all know a friend is not going to flip the bill for that. In this day of texting instead of calling, why not give the gift of time? A personal gift card from you to your best friend. A gift of a lunch and spa afternoon with your friend, sometime in January after the holidays when it is nasty out
and you can have the time to chill with them, talk, enjoy the memory.

Rejoice and recharge - Try not to charge anything! You don’t need to impress anyone. If you don’t like the idea of a gift of time. Make something or give a gift that is tangible and that a friend can use to pamper themselves, like a wonderful soap or some yummy food. I think some of my favorite gifts I have received are simple and often homemade. It’s about caring, not the money.

Decking the Halls - I come from the more is more philosophy when it comes to holiday deco. However the older I get, the years that I don’t have a party or family visiting I just give myself permission not to do as much. Put up those things that make you feel good, things that are near and dear to you. The rest of the deco will be there next year, when you are ready to bedazzle the whole house! It’s OK! Remember Martha Stewart has a staff!!!

Holiday Parties – don’t spread yourself too thin and attend every party and function. Take time for yourself; it’s ok to stay home sometimes. Ask yourself am I just a party filler or is this really a close friend and prioritize your parties. It may sound horrible, but if you are invited to 8 parties, how good will you feel if you go to all of them?

That Dysfunctional Family Member- We all have at least one, sometimes a dozen. As my dear friend James will remind me, “That is not your stage; we all have our own journey that we are on.” We can’t control, fix or manage the world. Not everyone is your responsibility. Lead by example and take care of you. By being an observer you may learn from others how you want to live and conduct your life. If they are a person you just can’t be around, that is also ok. I believe we can also create our own family, through a network of friends!

Happy Holidays to Me! - Love yourself! Don’t sabotage all of your hard work and exercise you have been doing with a 5 pound weight gain from emotional eating. Learn when to say when! Also treat yourself to a gift! The year is coming to an end and you have made it. So buy yourself a little something, something!

So let go of pressure, expectations, guilt, panic and worry. Have fun and bring out your inner child! Do what makes you happy! By being a happy person you will make others happy! It’s contagious!

As they say in “AA”- H.A.L.T.

H- Hungry- treat yourself to a healthy snack and drink some water

A –Angry- if you find yourself angry or frustrated, take a break, breathe or do some yoga

L- Lonely- melancholy? See a friend, help a food shelter, do something to get you out of your head.

T- Tired- Get some rest! Don’t get worn down and get a cold! Sleep!

Love yourself and have a Happy, Happy New Year!

Hope to hear from you about some of your favorite memories! If you have any questions or need a suggestion let me know! I am here to help!

Excerpts and Giveaway: Two Holiday Novels!

Today we're featuring excerpts from some festive reads that are sure to get you into the holiday spirit while you're drinking hot cocoa by the fireplace and listening to your favorite holiday songs. Cherish PR has copies for TWO lucky readers anywhere in the world (each winner will only get one of these titles, not both.)

Sleigh Bells in the Snow by Sarah Morgan tells the tale of marketing expert Kayla Green, who once upon a time saw Christmas as her favorite time of year, until a family tragedy shattered that fairy tale. Now all Kayla wants is for Christmas to be over, as fast as possible, so when an opportunity to work all through the holidays arises, she snaps it up. However the gorgeous new client Jackson O’Neil turns work into pleasure and Kayla begins to feel out of her depth. He makes her crave the happy-ever-after she once dreamt of, but due to many failed relationships, Kayla finds this terrifying. And as the snowflakes continue to fall, will the woman who doesn’t believe in the magic of Christmas finally fall under its spell?

“Angie called from The Washington Post. I told her you’d call her back. And I finished that media list.”
Stacey leaned across the desk and Kayla was nearly asphyxiated.
“Er – nice perfume.” Her hand wrapped around the tall cappuccino she’d picked up on her way to the office. She unwrapped her cashmere scarf and dropped it over her chair, sending snowflakes floating across her desk. “It’s freezing out there. If I’d know New York was this cold in winter I would have requested the LA office.” Snatching a sip of coffee, she toed off the boots she’d worn to walk the short distance from the apartment and dragged her shoes from the drawer in her desk.
Through the glass wall that cut her off from the rest of the fortieth floor, she could see two of the junior account executives discreetly replenishing makeup.
“What’s going on? Brett will hit the roof if he walks past and sees lip gloss and girl bonding”
“Brett’s with Jackson O’Neil. They’re waiting for you in the boardroom
“Jackson O’Neil is the reason for the perfume and the sudden run on cosmetics?”
“The man is smoking hot Kayla.”
Only half listening, Kayla pulled her phone out of her pocket, checking new emails while she pushed her feet into her shoes. “Did you get any more information on him?”
“Yes. He is insanely sexy and –“ Stacey blushed, “-single.”
“I meant on the company.”
“I sent everything I found to your in-box this morning, but Kayla he’s –“
“Somehow I’ve managed to amass fifty emails since I left my apartment. How is that possible? I cleared my in-box at 5.00am” Kayla put down her coffee, slid her phone into her bag and scooped up the stack of notes she’d scribbled at three in the morning. “When I saw the snow I assumed O’Neil would cancel.”
“He took an earlier flight because the forecast was bad and he wanted this done. I collected him from the foyer. I managed to behave with dignity and not leap on him.”
“That would have given a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘full service agency.’” Grinning, Kayla smoothed her hair and took a deep breath. “Go and stick your head under the water cooler.”
“Your in-box is the equivalent of a cold-shower. By the way, this came for you. It’s marked Personal so I didn’t open it. I guess it’s from someone who doesn’t have your home address.” Stacey handed her an envelope, and Kayla recognised her step-mother’s handwriting.
Cold trickled down her spine. It was like landing naked in a snowdrift.
“Thanks.” Stuffing it quickly into her bag, she strode out of her office and took the stairs down to the foyer, wishing she’d left the envelope on her desk instead of putting it in her bag. Now it was there, she couldn’t stop thinking about it. It made the bag feel heavy even though it weighed no more than a few flakes of snow.

Make My Wish Come True by Fiona Harper follows homely Juliet – Christmas cook extraordinaire – as she tries to keep it together in the wake of her marriage breakdown. Despite her best attempts at creating the perfect Christmas, the cracks are beginning to show. Meanwhile, her bright, vivacious sister Gemma has no qualms about leaving Christmas in Juliet’s capable hands and escaping the pressure of her glamorous job, and the festive madness, by jetting off – yet again - to somewhere warm. This time however, Juliet snaps. To make it up to her sister, Gemma offers her the perfect solution – they’ll swap Christmases; Gemma will stay at home and cook the turkey, and Juliet can have a relaxing break in the sun. But with Will, Juliet’s dishy neighbor who’s far too nice to float Gemma’s boat, and Marco, a suave Italian with his own ideas to help Juliet unwind, will the sisters abandon caution and make this a Christmas swap to remember?

Gemma rapped on the trailer door – loud enough to be heard, but not so firmly it might be interpreted as a demand. As she waited the icy wind cut into her cheeks and her knuckles froze into a fist. Glamorous job? Hah! Don’t make her laugh. She pulled the hood of her waterproof closer round her face and got ready to smile brightly.
He wouldn’t open the door himself, of course. Too used to having a faceless someone do it for him.
She knocked a second time and her phone buzzed in her pocket. She ignored it. Even if he was the director, ranting and raving about the whereabouts of his A-list actor, answering it would only slow her down.
It seemed an age before she heard a muffled ‘Yeah?’ from the other side of the trailer door. If she’d gone by tone of voice alone, she’d have guessed he was soaking up the sun on a Caribbean beach, not freezing to death on the fringes of Western Ireland in December.
A wall of heat hit her when she stepped inside. No wonder he sounded so relaxed. The temperature in here really was verging on tropical. It was certainly warm enough for the six-foot hunk of blond gorgeousness she’d come looking for to only be dressed in a faded T-shirt and a pair of shorts as he lounged on a sofa further down the trailer. She closed the door behind her and instantly started to sweat in her layers of thermals and assorted woolly things.
“Hey, Gemma,” he said, and smiled, revealing his far too white teeth. For some reason she found all that symmetry slightly irritating.
Even more irritating was his state of undress. He was supposed to be wearing the dark garb the wardrobe department had carefully selected to suggest a tortured hero on the verge of saving the world. However, she let none of her annoyance bleed through to her tone of voice. “They’re ready for you on set now Toby.” Her face was a mask of calm as she re-jigged times and schedules in the back of her head.
If she could hurry him along, they might not lose any time before the light went. She’d had to change the call sheet for the following day three times already. The last batch of A4 sheets sat ready and waiting in her makeshift office and she really didn’t want to dump them and start all over again.
She glanced around. Where was the girl from wardrobe? She’d seen her come in here not half an hour ago, and she could have sworn she hadn’t seen her leave. “Has Caitlin gone to fetch something from the truck?” she asked innocently.
Toby just smirked as his eyes darted towards the back of the trailer where the bedroom was situated. “Something like that.”

Double Feature Review: Something sweet

By Melissa Amster

The Matchbaker by Jerrica Knight-Catania

Ingredients

1C Chaos
1Tbsp Romance
3Tsp Betrayal
2C Comedy
1Pinch Magic

Candace Cooper is living the life she set out to live. With a posh apartment in Manhattan, a high-powered job that takes her all over the world, and designer clothes that most women would kill to have in their closet, she's definitely living the high life. But when her But when her best friend drags her to a seedy section of Paris to meet with a crack-pot fortune teller, she hears things she doesn't want to hear. She desperately tries to ignore the unsolicited advice, but that becomes nearly impossible when her perfect life starts to unravel. (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads.)

The Matchbaker is a light and entertaining novel that fans of Sophie Kinsella and Juliet Madison will especially enjoy. It has all the factors that make up a great chick lit story: career, romance, fashion, humor, friendship and, of course, cupcakes! The cupcakes were almost their own character, as they sounded delicious. (There are recipes at the end of the story, should you wish to try them yourself.) Just have a suspension of disbelief when you read this story because it's not entirely based on reality. Especially since the ending ties up a little too neatly, as a result. Overall, it's a cute story that I'd recommend to all our readers and I hope Jerrica Knight-Catania will take another foray into the chick lit world again soon!

Of course, I have a movie cast picked out:
Candace: Lacey Chabert
Holly (Candace's sister): Anna Camp
Colin: Stephen Amell
Joe: Jared Padalecki

Thanks to Jerrica Knight-Catania for the book in exchange for an honest review.

There's More to Life Than Cupcakes by Poppy Dolan

Ellie Redford has a husband, a job and a home. According to the rest of the world, it’s baby o’clock already. Shame life doesn’t come with a recipe…

Ellie knows that starting a family with lovely husband Pete would be an amazing adventure. Pete would make a brilliant dad and she’d have an excuse to eat shed loads of Cherry Bakewell. But Ellie’s bestie would rather she was up at three a.m. with a bottle of Malibu, not formula. And with redundancies looming, Ellie’s boss isn’t exactly going to throw her a shower if she disappears for a year, with pay.

While Ellie juggles her feelings (and everyone else’s) as competently as a drunken clown, she finds herself signing up for a baking class, alongside the young, free and sizzling hot Joe. As they work buns and shape tarts, is there more to their friendship than a shared appreciation of Paul Hollywood?

Ellie’s soufflés may be rising, but her personal life is one big soggy mess. If she doesn't make a decision soon, she may just lose everything that matters to her. Maybe it's time to take off the pinny and face up to the truth: there’s more to life than cupcakes... (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads.)

There's More to Life than Cupcakes also has a lot of important chick lit elements: career, romance, friendship, food and blogging. I liked the questions this novel raises in terms of whether a woman should or shouldn't have children and all the expectations that are placed on women when they reach a certain age. I definitely felt frustrated for Ellie when she was dealing with all the different pressures in her life and trying to decide what was best for her own needs. I liked how she used a blog to sort through her thoughts. Had this blog actually existed, I would have been following it and commenting often. While this was a conflict running through the story, it went along its merry way for the most part and didn't really climax until close to the end. I had no idea it would take such a long story to get across the main message. However, it stayed afloat and didn't drag, thanks to fun dialogue and humorous misunderstandings. I just wish there had been a glossary at the end to decipher all the British slang and pop culture references. Overall, it is an enjoyable novel for an easy read at this busy time of year. Just make sure you read it on a full stomach or you'll find yourself noshing on treats after reading about all the baked goods. And while I can easily visualize the characters, I don't have any casting ideas in mind, but maybe some new actors could make their debut if this became a movie.

Eleanor Gwyn-Jones takes the stage...plus a book giveaway

Today we have the pleasure of having Eleanor Gwyn-Jones on the blog. Her debut novel, Theatricks, just came out last week! Eleanor lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but originally hails from Surrey, England. Huzzah! She studied biology at Southampton University before taking to the stage as an actress, agent and administrator of a touring theatre company. She performed in theatres, studios, schools and festivals across the British Isles before moving to the States. It was whilst visa-dangling and unable to take on acting work that she started to write and decided she far preferred it to anything else in the world! In 2008, Eleanor started her own ‘at home’ business to afford her more time to be with her ‘book babies.’ Now she spends her time writing by day and teaching ladies to look fabulous at night. She is a travel junkie—it’s research, darling, research!—a gourmand, a yogi, a sometime blogger and she adores her family and friends beyond all measure. She is currently putting the finishing key strokes to the sequel to Theatricks, due for release in 2014.

If she weren’t writing, she’d like to think you’d find her in Downton, The Paradise, or having a goblet of wine with Tyrion in King’s Landing.

Thanks to Omnific Publishing we have THREE digital copies and THREE paperback copies of Theatricks to give to some lucky readers anywhere in the world.

Get to learn more about Eleanor at her websiteFacebook and Twitter.

First off, tell us about your awesome book, Theatricks, and what inspired you to write it…
I love this question!  Oh gosh, Theatricks is so engrained, so part of me, it’s my heart on a platter.  I’m still in awe of how it came about, because, certainly, it was never in the plan; but I happened to take a vacation to Florida, I met an American, and my history was forever changed.  It was a true cosmic turn of events.
I left my full-time job as a stage actress and theatre company administrator near London, and I said ‘yes’ to the Pennsylvanian I had fallen in love with.  Never did I imagine the flaming gauntlet that we would both have to go through to be together; how applying and eventually being approved for a fiancée visa would be its own mission impossible!  We made it, were married, and still I had to wait nearly a year to receive a green card to work in the States.
I would write long letters home—my aunties didn’t ‘do’ email—and the responses back always said the same thing, “you should be a writer.”

I had always wanted to be an actress, so it seemed bizarre to me that people who knew me would ever suggest anything else, but one day, after months of not being allowed to work, I opened my laptop and I started to write.

I took the first scene I wrote—the spa scene—to a local writers’ group, read the chapter and was overwhelmed by their encouragement and praise, so I carried on.  Eleanor evolved into Enna and she stole my visa issue, created her own theatrical problems and dallied with the men of my dreams, sometimes those of my reality!

Emily Giffin quoted someone on Facebook recently, saying that “every novel is a letter to someone.”  I like that.

We think authors are the best people to ask this question: What have you read and loved lately?
I am totally late to the party, but I just love Kate Morton.  She is more the litty side of women’s fiction but she has that Downton Abbey historical drama down and I love the mystery and romance of war, class repression, OOH! It’s so very English and romantic!  And I’m afraid that I am a hopeless romantic.  I read The Distant Hours and The House at Riverton recently and was absolutely captivated.
What else?  Oh, my not-so-guilty-pleasure!  I love the hedonist, casual carpe diem mantra of HBO and Lena Denham’s series The Girls, set in my old ‘hood in Brooklyn, and fellow Britty in the City, Gemma Burgess wrote a fun young adult series Brooklyn Girls that completely tides me over between series.  St. Martin’s Press sent me an advanced copy and I wrote a blog about it.  I know, I know, it is young adult, not really intended for my age group, but for an early thirties reader hitting the dating scene again (yes, you can fill in the dots between meeting the American and now) it is interesting to read how Gen Y dates and rolls!

On my ‘to read’ list is Sylvain Reynard’s series.  S.R. has been just lovely on Twitter being so incredibly supportive of me as a fellow writer.  I have cued up the Gabriel’s Inferno series and my fingers are twitching to get started!

Characters really make the story for us. What three words would best describe your heroine & what about her called out to you to write her story?
Passionate, duty-driven and adventurous.
Her story started as my story, it evolved from there.  She is not a bookish introvert waiting for Darcy; she’s not an over-weight calorie-counter waiting for someone to see her, not her size; she’s not an underestimated blonde; she’s just human and hard-working and hence, incredibly endearing.  She’s not afraid to try.  She’s desperately afraid to fail, to hurt others, to let people down, but by the end of the novel she accepts that she can fail spectacularly and learn and love…  She is lead by her heart, halted by her head, but powered by passion.

If Theatricks were made into a movie (or perhaps even a stage play), who would you want to cast in the lead roles?
My mum—whose name is actually Bridget Jones, I know, isn’t that wild?!—always wanted me to write a screenplay for me to act in!  Well, look Mum!  Of course, I would go without cheese, wine and chocolate—my three favourite food groups—if it meant I could play Enna Petersen.  But I do understand that Hollywood usually wants ‘a name.’  Enna is quintessentially British, so I see a late twenties, brunette British actress like Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in Downton Abbey.  She has that viper strength yet lamb-like vulnerability that Enna needs.
Cole has always been Ben Affleck in my mind.  I loved his strong, brooding Byronesque performance in The Town.  He is older than Enna, he is suave, hard working, and he knows what he wants.  It’s Enna.
Will.  Will is that mercurial spirit!  He is a hedonist, impulsive, hot-blooded, passionate theatrical lead.  He loves attention and he gets it.  When I watched Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt in the motor racing film, Rush, he was Will.  He was mesmerizing, magnetizing, and tantalizing.  But Will is darker.  I know Hollywood can do anything, but I imagine Will physically to have the more swarthy look of Henry Cavill.
Lucy- Rosamund Pike.  I have always loved Ros as an actress, since I saw her play Juliet for the National Youth Theater in 1996.  She was just 18 or 19 and she has such a Brit spirit and gives me the sense of being an intrepid traveler, a la Lucy, the travel writer.
Kay Petersen—Cherie Lunghi.  A beautiful, classical actress.  I saw her play Miss Testvalley in the BBC adaptation of Edith Wharton’s Buccaneers and hence-forth loved her.
Leo Petersen – Matthew Goode.  He has that mischievous sparkle in his eyes.  He is perfect for Enna’s brother.  Physically, he will have the same brunette hair, fine features and slender lines of Enna.
Bob Petersen—Michael Caine, who else could play Enna’s dad?  Umm… no one.  Michael Caine is king.

How do you pay it forward?
I think everyone is important.  I shake hands and look people in the eye; I greet strangers with a ‘hello’ and a smile if they look at me in the supermarket; I try not to say anything negative.  I try to be the best version of myself in a ‘do unto others’ kind of way.  It may not be much, but if everyone greeted people and spread kindness, I think there would be far less sadness in the world.  Don’t you agree?

Who was your celebrity crush when you were a kid?
Oh Lord!  Now you’re asking.  As a young tween I had black and white photographs of Sean Connery as James Bond.  As I have aged, I have merely changed Bonds!  Now I am firmly, very firmly, in Daniel Craig’s camp.

What TV show, book, or movie reminds you most of your own life?
Oh no, I hate that this sounds so cliché, but Sex And The City immediately springs to mind.  I often write in my underwear; I like naughty little drinkies and eating out; I have fabulous girlfriends who have, through relationship highs and cavernous lows, through bottles of wine and vats of hummus, always been there; I wear feathers, fishnets and bizarre regalia others would raise eyebrows at; and there was a Mr. Big.  Once upon a time.

Would you rather have too much time or too much money?
More time.  Money I can control to some extent, time I cannot.  I read once, gosh I wish I could recall what book it was from, a passage that went something like this:
"I’m scared of Time.  I’m scared that the portion in front of me will be less than the one behind.”  It’s always rather haunted me.  Time is definitely my most valuable commodity.  There’s so much more I want to write about, read about, smell, taste, touch, see, hear, travel to, revel in; I just need more time to do it."
