Introduction and interview by Melissa Amster
Today's guest and I have three things in common: Our first names, we're both moms and we've lived in New Jersey for a brief period of time. That's where the similarities end though, as Melissa Dalton-Bradford has lived in multiple foreign countries and has written a book about her experiences called Global Mom (reviewed here).
Melissa Dalton-Bradford is a mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend, writer, independent scholar, professional soprano, avid reader, and a serious avoider of all things mathematical. She holds a BA in German and an MA in Comparative Literature, (both from Brigham Young University), and speaks, read and write fluent German, French, and Norwegian. (She's also conversant in Mandarin.) Melissa has taught language (English and German), humanities and writing on the university level, have served on the editorial board of Segullah, a women’s literary magazine, and has published award-winning poetry and prose. And that's not all... In Vienna (city of opera), Melissa began singing seriously, and has over the decades since then performed professionally as a concert soloist and musical theater actress in the U.S., Scandinavia, Central Europe, and South East Asia. She and her husband, Randall, have lived in Vienna and Hong Kong, and have raised their four children (Parker, Claire, Dalton, and Luc) in Oslo, Paris, Munich, and Singapore.
You can find Melissa at her blog and on Facebook and Twitter.
Thanks to BookSparks PR, we have one copy of Global Mom for a lucky US reader.
What was the biggest adjustment you've had to make during any of your moves?
The biggest adjustment by far in any move anywhere was the transition to Munich from Paris, which was also when we moved from being an "intact" family to a broken one, after the tragic and untimely death of our oldest, Parker. It requires phenomenal energy and focus to handle a major international move with a new language, culture, school system and a new job for my husband. But it takes exponentially more energy and focus to remain vertical - and help your surviving family members remain vertical - after major traumatic loss. That move eclipsed anything I'd ever managed before.
What was the easiest language for you to learn?
German, because I began learning it the best way possible; when I was a child, through natural contact with native speakers, and on native soil. I refined it much later in life in my 20's, but already had a pretty darned good foundation set in place years earlier.
Is there something you had to leave out of your book for length purposes but would like to share about briefly here?
This question makes me laugh! I had to leave out a whole second book for length purposes! Seriously, my biggest challenge as a writer is trimming. I do have many, many stories to tell. . .We cut an entire chapter describing solo trans-global airline travel with four young children. We hauled all their gear and I hauled my children, including one a chest-pack and one a backpack. And I recall that delightful moment when my toddler projectile vomited right into the big open designer bag of the woman sitting in the row behind me, and the flight attendant, unwilling to help out, told me, chawnking her gum, "Who ever throws up, cleans up."
Oh, and that time in Hong Kong when I was locked in a sweltering, flea-infested, outdoor laundry room all day long and in - how shall I put this delicately?- in the most compromising state: unclothed and with my newborn baby at my breast. I can shake my head and laugh until I cry now, but those were ten dangerous and frightening hours. I cried for real.
(I nursed that same baby while squatting in rat-infested alleys, while standing on public buses holding onto ceiling straps, and while holding an unfolded map in my teeth as a sort of privacy shield while crushed into elevators in China.)
I would have loved to have included more input from other family members' perspectives. I'd thought of writing an entire chapter solely from the POV of my husband, for instance. And I tinkered with the concept of a chapter each from each child's perspective for added color and texture, especially in the chapters regarding early grief, when everyone was floundering in his or her own way. But I knew this was not intended primarily as a grief memoir, and so I limited myself there.
Are you still in contact with people from places you've lived in the past? If so, who are you closest with?
I am in regular contact with many of my friends from Norway, Versailles, Paris, Munich and Singapore. My friends from New York, Hong Kong and Vienna have been harder to maintain a grip on, only because I lived there long before the advent of Facebook, (and even before email!), and so I've had to do FB searches for them.
From Norway, we are still close to the Karlssons, (Christian and Bente, if you remember them from the book), Idar, Turid, many friends from the island where we lived, our children's school teachers, some of my musician friends, and several of Randall's work colleagues. From France, I have a vibrant FB connection with nearly every girlfriend mentioned in the narrative, and since we now live in Switzerland, France is next door, and we return often to maintain our friendships there. We are deeply attached to our school and church communities in Paris. The assistant headmaster of the American School of Paris, Aaron Hubbard, became like a brother to us, and the simple sight of certain ASP faculty and students is potent for me. Those ties are life-sustaining.
Our Munich and Singapore friends we see almost as regularly, odd as that seems, since Germany is close to Switzerland, and our Singapore friends tend to travel to us. Our two youngest, Dalton and Luc, have maintained fierce ties to those Singapore friends, and we have spent vacation time with them whenever possible. Of course, social media has utterly transformed our sense of connectedness, but nothing compares to sitting and talking in the real world.
Come to think of it, as I write this I am in NYC for book promotions, but have been in daily FB or texting contact with friends from every place we have lived. Yesterday, one of Dalton's best friends from Singapore, now heading for university in the US, met us on Time Square. And just this morning, some of our dearest friends from Paris, John and Renee (from the book), met us at Lincoln Center.
If "Global Mom" were made into a movie, who would you want to play your role?
Ah, this is hard. It would have someone who can play a blonde American, who sings professionally, speaks several languages convincingly, can do comedy as well as drama, and can age from her mid-twenties to late-forties. (It helps if she hyperventilates over math.) My idol, as you can guess, is Meryl Streep. But from the looks of her, she went past algebra in high school. Darn.
What is the strangest food you've ever eaten in any of the places where you've lived?
Monkey brain in China. Bear in Finland. Cheez-Spread in a tube in Pennsylvania.
Your "About" page on your blog mentions that you are a singer. What is your favorite song to perform?
Another torturous question! There are so many answers - from Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns", Bach's "Erbarme Dich" and "Bist Du Bei Mir", to Grieg's "Solveig's Sang" to "La Valse a Mille Temps", ABBA's "Like An Angel Passing Through The Room", to "Over My Head", a delicate spiritual.
But if I have to settle on one, I'd say I enjoy "Summertime" from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", because I can sing it very high (as it was written) and as I studied it with Anne Brown (who was the original "Bess", and who happened to live in Norway). Or I can sing it in my lowest jazz register, as I really did in jazz clubs Oslo. "Summertime" has been sung by everyone on the planet, I know that, and yes, I've even heard in turned into generic elevator music. But that solo carries special personal significance for me. You'll understand when you read my book.
And when you listen to the audio version I recorded, I actually sing it!
Just for fun, who is your favorite celebrity with the first name Melissa?
Finally, an easy question. Melissa Amster. Of course!

Summer days, driftin' away....
Even though summer is almost over, we wanted to share our thoughts about this time of year with you! Feel free to talk about your favorite summer activities or share a favorite summer memory with us. We love getting to know you, as well as having you get to know us better.
Melissa A:
1.Where is your favorite place to vacation during summer?
I usually just end up going to Chicago every summer, but had to postpone it a bit this year. In the past, I would go to St. Joseph, Michigan for an art fair and to hang out at the beach. It was a quaint and romantic place to go with my husband.
2.Favorite “summer” food?
I like doing barbecues with lots of burgers, tater tots, corn on the cob and watermelon. :)
3.Favorite “summer” drink (alcoholic or not)?
Lemonade
4.What is your favorite outdoor activity in the summer?
Anything water related. I love going to water parks. I feel like such a kid again!
5.Favorite “summertime” song?
"Hey Ya" by Outkast because it reminds me of my honeymoon, which was very summery. Also, "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows has a fun summery feel. "American Ride" by Toby Keith reminds me of my summer move two years ago. (See next question.)
6.Favorite summer memory?
My 30th birthday party, which was Hawaiian themed and mostly outdoors. My husband and some close friends planned everything and I just had to show up. My husband also made an ice cream cake decorated with a picture of me doing a hula dance. It was hilarious!
I also will always associate my move to Maryland in 2009 with summer and the memories make me all warm and fuzzy. I've been here for two years now and still love everything about it!
Finally, I remember going to Barefoot Bay in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin when I was a kid. It was such a fun resort and I always had a great time there. It made me think of Kellerman's from "Dirty Dancing," minus Patrick Swayze.
7.Favorite summertime treat?
ICE CREAM!!! But it's a treat any time of year too. :)
8.Summer wardrobe staple?
Sandals
9.What’s in your beach bag?
Books, of course! And sunscreen. My whole family has fair skin!
10. Best “beach/pool” book you’ve read so far?
"Firefly Lane" by Kristin Hannah. It's like "Beaches" for the 21st century. Beautiful story about friendship and it's what got me hooked on Kristin Hannah's writing in the first place.
I also associate Jennifer Weiner's books with summer since they come out in July now.
11. What's on your summer reading list?
I still have tons of books I want and need to read. I don't know where to start anymore! :) However, I just started "Before Ever After" by Samantha Sotto and "No Wings Attached" by Stella DeLeuze. Both have a fantasy or fairy tale side to them.
12.Favorite way to enjoy summer nights?
In an air conditioned house while eating a popsicle or ice cream bar. :)
13. Favorite thing about summer?
Celebrating Fourth of July and then my birthday a few weeks later.
14. Thing that reminds you most of summer?
Certain smells, like chlorine, sunscreen, citronella and barbecues.
Melissa P:
1. Where is your favorite place to vacation during summer?
This is a hard one for me because I DO love to go back to Chicago in the summer to visit friends, but I think my FAVORITE place is Cape Cod and Nantucket. I know that’s technically TWO places, so I’ll say The Cape and Islands. To me, east coast beaches just scream “summer” because they are really only utilized one season of the year and they completely come to life during that time.
2. Favorite “summer” food?
I love watermelon drizzled with local honey and sprinkled with chopped jalapenos. It’s an Arizona thing I guess (the hot peppers) and it just tastes so good together. Try it, I promise!
3. Favorite “summer” drink (alcoholic or not)?
My favorite alcoholic drink in the summer is “Skinny girl” margaritas (out of the bottle or homemade). I know many people in AZ drink them year round, but I usually reserve them for summer. SO refreshing. My favorite non-alcoholic drink is water. Boring, yes, but absolutely necessary to survive 4 months of 100+ degree temps.
4. What is your favorite outdoor activity in the summer?
If I am in the desert then it’s definitely swimming and trying my hardest to lay by the pool and read, but that’s not realistic. We usually have to read IN the pool, otherwise we melt, literally. If I am somewhere with nicer weather then I like to walk and ride a bicycle.
5. Favorite “summertime” song?
I have so many! I love reggae and Island music in the summer, but my favorite is probably “Turn Your Lights Down Low” by Bob Marley and Lauren Hill. No, they didn’t sing it together, but there is a remix with both of them and it’s been my favorite “summer” song since around 2002. My newest favorite is “Just Go” with Akon and Lionel Richie. It makes me want to go an a three month trip and escape with my hubby every time I hear it!
6. Favorite summer memory?
This is easy. Although I have a million amazing memories, it would hands down be the first summer that my husband and I dated. We both were working for the Four Seasons at the time and had over a month of vacation time off together. We went to Chicago (my husbands first time there and where I grew up), Philadelphia to visit his mother (my first time meeting her in person), and then went to New York City (where he grew up). While in NYC, there was a 2 day blackout! It doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, but it was the most memorable summer I have ever had.
7. Favorite summertime treat?
Ice cream! I really don’t eat ice cream any other time of year, but my mom always has sugar cones and a plethora of flavors in the summertime. It’s like my own personal Baskin Robbins.
8. Summer wardrobe staple?
Bikini! And sunscreen is a MUST! If you don’t have naturally darker skin (and even if you do) you will burn in a matter of minutes in Arizona. Am I sensing a theme here? :)
9. What’s in your beach bag?
Sunscreen, a book (obviously), my iPhone, a small portable speaker for my iPhone, water, a beach towel, snacks (usually goldfish crackers), and chapstick with SPF.
10. Best “beach/pool” book you’ve read so far?

10. Best “beach/pool” book you’ve read so far?
“The Beach House” by Jane Green. As much as I love all of Elin Hilderbrands books, Jane is pretty much my all-time favorite author. So Far.
11. What’s on your summer reading list?
“Little Black Dress” by Susan McBride, “The Blue Bistro” by Elin Hilderbrand, “J’adore New York” by Isabelle Lefleche, “Paris, Baby” by Kirsten Lobe, and “I Heart Paris” by Lindsey Kelk. There are many more, but I could go on for days!
12. Favorite way to enjoy summer nights?
Drinking wine or margaritas and listening to music by the pool with our neighbors or my family and going for night swims (no chance of skin cancer).
13. Favorite thing about summer?
My favorite thing about summer is the feeling of being on vacation. Laying by the pool and getting together to swim and have cocktails with the family and our friends. It's always the time of year that we go on vacation to escape the heat, usually somewhere cooler! Although it's hot, there's something to look forward to!
14. Thing that reminds you most of summer?
This is a really hard one because it's summer (temp wise) almost year round here! If I base this answer off of my childhood then i'd have to say the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of sprinklers. If I base the answer on my life now, it would definitely be the smell of rain. We get some pretty good monsoon storms between June and September, so the smell of wet dirt kind of goes hand in hand with summer.

Blow out the candles and open our latest gift!
**Giveaway is now closed**
Danielle Steel's latest novel, "Happy Birthday" is something everyone can relate to. We all have birthdays, right? :) It's a matter of whether we embrace them or cower from them, but we all wonder what we have to show for our age at different times in our lives.
In honor of the release of this new novel, we wanted to talk about our favorite Danielle Steel novels of the past and favorite birthday memories. In addition, Elizabeth Swain of Transworld Publishers (a division of Random House UK) has two copies to share with some lucky readers anywhere in the world. So make a wish, blow out the candles, and maybe "Happy Birthday" will be the next gift you open! (If not, you can always treat yourself or even buy it for a friend for their birthday...)

Melissa P:
Favorite Danielle Steel novel: "Granny Dan." It is about a girl who finds out that her grandmother was once a ballerina in Russia :) It's a beautifully told and haunting story that was nearly impossible to put down.
Favorite birthday memory: My ninth birthday. Because my birthday is in October, my mom threw a Halloween costume party for me in our basement! It was so much fun, we bobbed for apples, danced to "Monster Mash", and made had a contest to see which team of two could get to the middle of a string of licorice with a marshmallow in the middle. The basement was decorated like a haunted house and all the food resembled bugs or body parts. (LOL!)

Melissa A:
Favorite Danielle Steel novel: "Star." A friend recommended this to me back in 2003 and I picked it up and fell in love with it right away. It's full of fire and emotion and I just wanted to cheer for Crystal, the heroine, the entire time (and cry for her when life was kicking her in the shins). There's even a made-for-television movie with Jennie Garth, but it's not as good as the book.
Favorite birthday memory: I'm sharing one of them in an upcoming blog post. There are so many others to list though! However, I'll pick one and stick with it! In 1998, I was obsessed with "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind." It's 30 plays in 60 minutes at a theater in Chicago (I think it's also in NYC too). On the Sunday closest to my 22nd birthday (yes, I'm giving away my age if you do the math), I decided to have a bunch of friends join me at a showing of TMLMTBGB. My parents made arrangements with the staff to do a set rate instead of basing each person's cost on the roll of a die. I think they even paid for all my guests, but it's been ages so I can't remember. After the show, they let us all stay in the waiting room for cake and to hang out for a while. I just had a blast at the show and it was a great way to bring in that birthday.
Thanks to Elizabeth Swain for sharing "Happy Birthday" with everyone!
How to win "Happy Birthday": Tell us about your favorite Danielle Steel novel or tell us which celebrity shares a birthday with you. Please include your e-mail address or another way to reach you.
Giveaway ends August 21st at midnight EST.
