Book Review: The Bright Spot

By Melissa Smoot

Luna Wright is a lot of things, but sweet and trusting isn’t on the list. However, she’s a sucker for the underdog and a hard-luck story. Adopted at birth, with scant knowledge of her biological family, she’s created her own inner circle, a motley crew which includes her bestie Willow, to help her run the struggling but charming Apple Ridge Farm.

With a farm-to-table café as well as a menagerie of rescued animals (complete with a baby goat who keeps escaping to the pantry to eat the secret stash of decidedly not organic potato chips), it’s the best home she’s ever known. But when the owner Silas, who they secretly call The Grinch, passes away, Luna discovers the farm is now under control of his investment manager, the enigmatic Jameson Hayes….and her. And that Silas had many, many secrets.

Now Luna’s carefully controlled corner of the world is threatened and she—along with some help from her friends—has to dig deep to find true strength and the real meaning of love and family. (Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.)

I loved everything about this story.

The Bright Spot is about a woman, Luna, who has been running Apple Ridge near Lake Tahoe. When the grumpy old owner, Silas, passes away, Luna finds out that not only has she inherited half of the farm, but that Silas was hiding a lot of other secrets. When a handsome stranger shows up and claims to be the other 50 percent owner, the whole farm crew is in for surprise after surprise.

This story was so heartfelt and sweet. While I can’t relate to owning or running a farm, I can certainly relate to the main character and how she handles her relationships with the fun and mismatched crew, who have all become her family. There were times that I felt like the author had taken my exact words out of my mind and my mouth when Luna was speaking to the others on the farm.

Throughout the entire book I was never sure what would happen and how things would end up. As soon as I thought I knew, another twist would come along. The rescued animals, the Chef, her best friend Willow, every character at Apple Ridge Farm was delightful and I enjoyed getting to know them all and rooting for them to succeed. Even the handsome stranger, Jameson, won me over.

If you are looking for a great book to cozy up with this winter, then this would be it. You will laugh, smile, and cheer on the entire cast of characters.

Thanks to HarperCollins for the book in exchange for an honest review.
