Book Review: Keeping Up With the Kershaws

By Sara Steven

As the devoted carer for famous antique expert Harold Kershaw, Karrie Morgan was always happy to keep a professional distance from his four spoilt grown-up children, who rarely made time for their father. But then a surprise involving Harold’s Will means Karrie is flung headlong into a press scandal, and into the chaotic world of the surviving Kershaws.

With the support of her trusted childhood friend Andrew, mild-mannered Karrie must face down ruthless ice queen Portia, master manipulator Gabriel, Botox fanatic Arabella, and ladies’ man Rafe, star of reality TV show Raised in Richmond … although perhaps not as fake and flashy as he initially seems?

As vicious rumours circulate and Karrie’s past comes back to haunt her, she struggles to know who to trust. Can she keep up with the Kershaws’ schemes? (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads)

After reading the title of this book, my mind instantly went to Keeping Up with the Kardashians, wondering if there might be similar circumstances in dealing with celebrity fodder and scandal. Keeping Up with the Kershaws didn’t disappoint. Much like the small-screen television show, the Kershaws are all about the drama, particularly after discovering just how much their father loved Karrie–his will proves that. In an attempt to change the status quo, the siblings go after Karrie in some of the worst ways, creating a nightmare scenario that leaves Karrie questioning what she should do, and how she can survive their manipulative attacks.

While she’s dealing with all of that, she has the garnered support of her childhood friend Andrew, a man she feels knows her, inside and out. I appreciated the background information provided that allows the reader the opportunity of knowing why they are as close as they are, and why the relationship they have is so special. Yet there are events in his life happening beneath the surface that he isn’t sharing with Karrie, which adds more pressure and strain to their relationship. It was also interesting to see just how deeply hidden their feelings are for one another, which made me wonder if they’d ever get outside of the friend zone, or if more could ever come from it.

Rafe becomes a potential for Karrie, too. Having been on the receiving end of his siblings’ cruel jokes and treatment, he feels he can really relate to what Karrie is going through. But nothing is as it seems with the Kershaw family, and she never really knows if any of them are to be trusted, or if they are pulling strings in order to gain power and control over her. I wanted to know if Karrie would potentially give Rafe a chance, or if Andrew would somehow muddle that, or if he should muddle it because it should be him waiting in the wings. I love a good love triangle, and this was a good love triangle, hands down!

There was a bit of a surprise with one of the characters–I had a feeling it would turn out the way it did, so I didn’t feel like there was any big shock there, but it was still fun to find out how it would all go down. Harold Kershaw had quite a bit of secrets of his own left hidden for decades, which all comes to light while Karrie is trying to protect herself from his children. The Kershaws and their antics, along with Karrie’s fighting spirit kept me engaged–I wanted to see what would happen next!
