Guest Book Review: Keeping Score

By Sara Steven

Shannon has known since childhood what competition can do to a friendship. When competition rears it’s ugly head in adulthood, however, it’s a whole new ball game.

In Keeping Score, Jami Deise’s debut novel, Shannon’s son Sam is an up and coming baseball player. So is Sam’s best friend Matthew. Jennifer is Matthew’s mom, and Shannon’s BFF. When the two boys try out for the same elite baseball team, hoping to score a spot, Shannon and Jennifer become instant rivals. Ugh. Shannon doesn't need more chaos in her life. She’s divorced, juggling motherhood with a career. Her ex-husband is in the picture, but not always around when Sam needs him, and most of the workload falls on Shannon. A romance develops between Shannon and the handsome baseball coach from the elite team, leading to rumors and cattiness. Shannon wants no part in it. Can’t we all just get along?

In the end, Shannon has to decide what’s most important in her life, as well as for Sam. Do you go with your heart, or listen to reason?

I really enjoyed Keeping Score. I’m no baseball fan, yet the scenes were beautifully depicted, and easy to follow. I identified with Shannon in many ways. She wants the best for her son, and is a proud mom. At times, she can be a little obsessed, but that’s what makes her real. If you are ready for a fun read, and want to know who comes out on top (will it be Team Shannon or Team Jennifer?),  give this book a read.

Thanks to Jami Deise for the book in exchange for an honest review. She's giving away some copies along with her "visit."

Sara Steven is a wife and stay-at-home mother of two rambunctious boys in Bellevue, NE. When she’s not running marathons, or working on her novel, she takes a break and opens up a good book (or turns on her Nook). Find her at her blog.
