Book Review: The Meet Cute Method

By Sara Steven

Do movie romances ever happen in real life...?

Frankie doesn't believe in true love. As relationships expert at popular magazine Stylife, she has learnt that dating disasters are far more common than happy ever afters.

So when she is tasked to find out if meet cutes can work in real life she is up for the challenge - but whether it's being a damsel in distress with a flat tyre, or spilling coffee over a stranger, she isn't convinced this can really lead to love.

But little does Frankie know that the ultimate meet cute opportunity is just around the corner. As she is whisked off her feet (all in the name of her work project of course...) perhaps true love isn't just for the movies after all...? (Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads.)

The title of this book by Portia had me intrigued from the get go, because I wasn’t familiar with what a “meet cute” is. It turns out that Frankie attempts to put herself into symbolic “cute” meet-ups with men in order to see if the situations will lead her to romance–because it appears that Frankie never seems to get it right when she tries to date outside of any meet cute, and even some of those experiences turn out to be a disaster!

I found the various situations really funny and charming. Frankie appears to be clumsy and oddball, but it only made her a more likable and endearing character. She begins to question if some of the random and coincidental meet-ups could be considered a genuine meet cute, particularly with a couple of the characters, and one is close to home for her. But then it becomes a matter of whether it’s right for her to spill everything and to share it with the general public, or if she should respect the privacy of what could be a budding relationship–and what would happen if anyone found out that the basis of the relationship stemmed from research for her job?

Even with the bits of drama Frankie goes through, I couldn’t help but wish I could be in her shoes. Granted, she has an unbearable boss–but the boss is a lot of fun and Portia did a great job of showcasing that through dialogue. Frankie’s future is uncertain, but she ends up in a tropical destination with the blessing of her boss, all in the name of journalism and research for her job. If you’re uncertain about the future, there’s no better way to deal with that than to spend it in paradise!

This ultimately becomes a lesson in discovering that there is more to who you are–even if you don’t believe it. Frankie has never felt that she could be the “relationship” type of person, because she’s never been successful in a relationship. But sometimes, it takes time and patience in meeting the right person for you, whether by way of a meet cute, or not. The Meet Cute Method was a lot of fun and of course, the cutest experience, and a definite five-star read!
