Spotlight and Giveaway: Love, Naturally

We are pleased to celebrate the publication of Sophie Sullivan's latest rom-com, Love, Naturally. Whether or not you have ever been camping, this story sounds charming! Thanks to St. Martin's Press, we have one copy to give away!

Presley Ayers is not the woman you bring on a camping trip. An accomplished concierge at an exclusive hotel in Great Falls, MI, she knows more about the top ten places for champagne and caviar than she does about the best hiking boots to go stomping around near Lake Michigan. But when she surprises her boyfriend of eight months with a vacation to the Get Lost Lodge and he dumps her instead, Presley decides to rough it solo and take the trip herself.

When Beckett Keller helps the gorgeous woman off the rickety boat and onto Lodge territory, it’s clear to him she's made a mistake. She doesn’t like hiking, fishing, or nature in general, so why did she go on this trip? He’s got other things on his mind though—a crumbling lodge, and his own plans and dreams that are forever deferred—so he doesn’t have time for Ms. Fish-Out-of-Water. Even so, neither Beckett nor Presley can help that inexplicable draw they feel towards each other. He’s all rough stubble and plaid shirts, while she’s all high heels and brand-name athleisurewear.

But you know what they say about opposites.

"I was immediately hooked on this heartwarming, sweet romance and the quaint town of Smile and its quirky, close-knit inhabitants! The Get Lost Lodge is the perfect place to lose yourself, find yourself, and fall in love in the process. #HotMountainMan and a perfect found family for the win!"
—Elle Cosimano, NYT Bestselling author of Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

"Sophie Sullivan proves opposites really do attract in this delightfully escapist, Fish Out of Water romance. Beckett is a rugged outdoorsman straight out of a fevered daydream! With a cozy, small-town setting that feels lived in, Love, Naturally reminds us of the magic of embracing the unexpected."
—Amy Lea, international bestselling author of Exes and O's

Book Review: The Bright Spot

By Melissa Smoot

Luna Wright is a lot of things, but sweet and trusting isn’t on the list. However, she’s a sucker for the underdog and a hard-luck story. Adopted at birth, with scant knowledge of her biological family, she’s created her own inner circle, a motley crew which includes her bestie Willow, to help her run the struggling but charming Apple Ridge Farm.

With a farm-to-table cafĂ© as well as a menagerie of rescued animals (complete with a baby goat who keeps escaping to the pantry to eat the secret stash of decidedly not organic potato chips), it’s the best home she’s ever known. But when the owner Silas, who they secretly call The Grinch, passes away, Luna discovers the farm is now under control of his investment manager, the enigmatic Jameson Hayes….and her. And that Silas had many, many secrets.

Now Luna’s carefully controlled corner of the world is threatened and she—along with some help from her friends—has to dig deep to find true strength and the real meaning of love and family. (Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.)

I loved everything about this story.

The Bright Spot is about a woman, Luna, who has been running Apple Ridge near Lake Tahoe. When the grumpy old owner, Silas, passes away, Luna finds out that not only has she inherited half of the farm, but that Silas was hiding a lot of other secrets. When a handsome stranger shows up and claims to be the other 50 percent owner, the whole farm crew is in for surprise after surprise.

This story was so heartfelt and sweet. While I can’t relate to owning or running a farm, I can certainly relate to the main character and how she handles her relationships with the fun and mismatched crew, who have all become her family. There were times that I felt like the author had taken my exact words out of my mind and my mouth when Luna was speaking to the others on the farm.

Throughout the entire book I was never sure what would happen and how things would end up. As soon as I thought I knew, another twist would come along. The rescued animals, the Chef, her best friend Willow, every character at Apple Ridge Farm was delightful and I enjoyed getting to know them all and rooting for them to succeed. Even the handsome stranger, Jameson, won me over.

If you are looking for a great book to cozy up with this winter, then this would be it. You will laugh, smile, and cheer on the entire cast of characters.

Thanks to HarperCollins for the book in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Romantic Comedy

By Melissa Amster

Sally Milz is a sketch writer for The Night Owls, a late-night live comedy show that airs every Saturday. With a couple of heartbreaks under her belt, she’s long abandoned the search for love, settling instead for the occasional hook-up, career success, and a close relationship with her stepfather to round out a satisfying life.

But when Sally’s friend and fellow writer Danny Horst begins dating Annabel, a glamorous actress who guest-hosted the show, he joins the not-so-exclusive group of talented but average-looking and even dorky men at the show—and in society at large—who’ve gotten romantically involved with incredibly beautiful and accomplished women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch called The Danny Horst Rule, poking fun at this phenomenon while underscoring how unlikely it is that the reverse would ever happen for a woman.

Enter Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation with a reputation for dating models, who signed on as both host and musical guest for this week’s show. Dazzled by his charms, Sally hits it off with Noah instantly, and as they collaborate on one sketch after another, she begins to wonder if there might actually be sparks flying. But this isn’t a romantic comedy—it’s real life. And in real life, someone like him would never date someone like her . . . right?

With her keen observations and trademark ability to bring complex women to life on the page, Curtis Sittenfeld explores the neurosis-inducing and heart-fluttering wonder of love, while slyly dissecting the social rituals of romance and gender relations in the modern age. (Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.)

This is my first time reading a Curtis Sittenfeld novel. I kept hearing good things about Romantic Comedy and decided to check it out. I'm glad I did! It was really enjoyable throughout and I still find myself thinking about it at random times.

I grew up watching Saturday Night Live and still watch clips from time to time. I'm even seeing one of the regulars perform locally next month and am excited about that! So it was cool to see what goes on behind the scenes of a show like SNL and how challenging it is to have to write new scripts every week in hopes that they'll make it onto the show at week's end. It's a lot of work for both the writers and the actors and this novel made me appreciate what they do even more.

I loved the banter between Sally and Noah. It came across as genuine and reminded me of the conversations I had with my husband when we first met. Especially with the emails they were sending at one point. The story had a Nora Ephron feel and I think she would have made this into a movie if she were still alive.

Overall, it was a light and breezy read about dating in the 21st century and the standards that are put on women vs. men when it comes to expectations and the like. I appreciated that Sally was closer to forty years old when this story was taking place. She also seemed like a relatable and down-to-earth character. Noah was incredibly likable too and I could see why he was so crush-worthy. I also found it funny and refreshing that the characters could talk so openly about bodily functions.

If you haven't checked out this novel yet or you're also new to Curtis's writing, definitely prioritize it in 2024! If you have already read it, I'd love to chat with you about it.

Movie casting suggestions:
Henrietta: Patti Harrison
Danny: Nat Wolff

Book Review: Recipe for a Charmed Life

By Allyson Bales

American chef Georgia May Jackson has one goal—to run her own restaurant in Paris. After a grueling decade working in Parisian kitchens, she is on the cusp of success. But in one disastrous night, Georgia loses her sous-chef position, her French boyfriend, and her sense of taste! Renowned for her refined palate and daring use of bold flavors to create remarkable dishes, Georgia is devastated to discover her culinary gift has simply...vanished.

When she receives a surprising invitation from her estranged mother, Georgia flees to a small island near Seattle hoping the visit will help her regain her spark in the kitchen. As she tentatively reconnects with her mom, a free-spirited hippie eager to make up for her past mistakes, Georgia realizes there is something about the enigmatic island she just cannot piece together. Good luck charms start appearing in the oddest places. Her neighbor is a puzzlingly antagonistic (and annoyingly handsome) oyster farmer. And her mom keeps hinting at a mysterious family legacy.

With the clock ticking and time running out to win her dream job in Paris, Georgia begins to unravel some astonishing secrets that make her wonder if the true recipe for a charmed life might look—and taste—very different than she ever imagined. (Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.)

The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie was one of my favorite reads last summer.  I can still remember where I was when I read about Lolly.  I was sitting at a campfire and was completely transformed into her world and Lolly had my heart! When I saw that Rachel Linden had a new book coming out I knew I needed to read it as soon as possible!

Recipe For A Charmed Life touched my heart just the same as The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie and once again I could not get enough of this magical world or these amazing characters!

Linden has a knack for strong character development and beautiful book settings.  This story largely takes place on San Juan Island.  I had not heard of this beautiful island before but immediately did a deep dive and learned that it is in Washington State, north of Seattle.  My sister lives in Seattle and this is definitely going to be a place I visit the next time I go and see her!  So many places that Georgia visits in the story are on my bucket list now!  I love when an author beautifully details the setting of a story and you are able to completely teleport there alongside the characters.  I felt like I was in Star’s garden or having wine with Georgia.  I really could not get enough.  I also really fell in love with Georgia and Star.

“You have so much potential, but if you lose your spark, you will burn out, burn up.  Your life will become bitter, without true meaning.  You must not let that happen.”

Georgia’s biggest dream since she was ten years old is to run her own kitchen in Paris.  Her biggest inspiration is Julia Child and she is desperate to matter.  In the space of one evening she becomes jobless, boyfriendless, and homeless.   She decides to see her mother, Star, who left her 28 years ago.  There are secrets and magic and I really enjoyed following along as their story and dynamic unfollowed.  I also really enjoyed the exploration of home being a place that gives you a sense of true belonging, not just an address where you get your mail.

Stories that really draw me in are ones that have characters that are relatable, and are going through changes that so many of us can understand.  Georgia is that character.  She reminded me a  bit of Amy Adams's character in the movie Julie and Julia.  Thoughtful, persistent, vulnerable, insecure, also loving and searching for what matters most to her and forgiveness.

If you love stories about self discovery with some romance and some magic, I highly recommend you read this one!  I can’t wait for you to meet Georgia!

Thanks to Berkley for the book in exchange for an honest review.

Spotlight and Giveaway: Hedging Your Bets

Today we are celebrating the publication of Jayne Denker's latest rom-com, Hedging Your Bets. Melissa enjoyed The Rom-Com Agenda (reviewed here) and is excited to read this one soon, as it features characters from that novel. Thanks to St. Martin's Press, we have FIVE copies to give away!

Gillian has been happily divorced for several years and, after trying a few dating apps, prefers to stay that way. Navigating her way through dates with fat shamers and lackluster men has left her with no desire to do anything other than work in her garden in her spare time. Who needs rude comments and awkward first-date conversation when soft roses and vibrant tulips are so much better?

Noah West has just moved to Willow Cove. After a rough breakup that leaves him looking to get far away, he relocates to the same small town he spent summers in as a teen—and moves right next door to Gillian. A big believer in minimalist design and that the best kind of plants are non-flowering, he knows as soon as he meets his neighbor that they are going to clash on just about everything. Now if only he could keep his eyes off her too. That might be helpful.

When a gardening contest brings out the competition in Gillian and Noah, dueling plant arrangements and fiery banter ensues. But is it possible that beneath all their differences, they might just be perfect for each other? (Synopsis courtesy of St. Martin's Press.)

Jayne Denker is the author of romantic comedies, including The Rom-Com Agenda and the Welcome to Marsden series. When she's not hard at work on another novel (or, rather, when she should be hard at work on another novel), she can usually be found frittering away stupid amounts of time on social media.
