After sixty years of marriage and five daughters, Lynn “Lovey” White knows that all of us, from time to time, need to use our little white lies.
Her granddaughter, Annabelle, on the other hand, is as truthful as they come. She always does the right thing—that is, until she dumps her hedge fund manager fiancé and marries a musician she has known for three days. After all, her grandparents, who fell in love at first sight, have shared a lifetime of happiness, even through her grandfather’s declining health.
But when Annabelle’s world starts to collapse around her, she discovers that nothing about her picture-perfect family is as it seems. And Lovey has to decide whether one more lie will make or break the ones she loves...
How easy or difficult was it to write Lies and Other Acts of Love after you published Dear Carolina?
Because of the way the publishing time table works, I actually had a book deal for Lies and Other Acts of Love before Dear Carolina was released, which was a huge relief! For me, the writing part is always very fun. (So far, at least!) Lies and Other Acts of Love actually started as two books, one about the main character Lovey and the other about the main character Annabelle. I was working on the two at the same time and decided to combine them together. After that, it was smooth sailing!
Which authors have inspired you?
These past nine months since Dear Carolina was released has been so incredible because I have gotten to meet so many of my idols! Elin Hilderbrand, Mary Alice Monroe, Patti Callahan Henry, Paula McLain and Jodi Thomas, just to name a few, are all authors that I have long admired and found an inspiration who have been so amazingly kind and generous to me. I am so grateful!
What did you do to celebrate when you were first published?
Dear Carolina came out on Cinco de Mayo, so we had a huge party with Mexican food and tequila and all that good stuff. A big group of friends helped throw it, and it was a wonderful launch night, one that I’ll always remember!
If you could cast the lead characters in a movie version of Lies...., who would you choose?
Jennifer Lawrence would be a great Annabelle. She’s from Kentucky, so I’m sure she could do a great Southern accent. Honor Blackman looks just like Lovey does in my head. And there aren’t too many amazing ninety-year-old actresses around. Helen Mirren would be amazing but they’d have to “age” her a little bit!
What is your longest friendship?
I’ve been friends with my friend Trevor since we were eighteen months old, right when we moved to my hometown of Salisbury, NC. Our moms used to put us in high chairs beside each other and feed us lunch!
What is your theme song?
Hmmm… I’m not sure I have a theme song! I love music and listen to it all the time. I’ve always wanted to write a song so perhaps I’ll have to write my theme song!

I can't remember the last lie that I told. My oldest living relative would be an aunt. She is in her 80s. She's not a blood relative because she was the sister-in-law of one of my step-fathers. But I still consider her family. I haven't seen her since I was in my 20s because I can't get to New York anymore.
ReplyDeleteI make it a point not to lie. Every now and again a small one has to go by if it's a direct question from a grandchild (who is a nosy teenager) and I don't feel the answer is beneficial to anyone. I even try to work around it in that instance. Oldest relative is my mother, 84.

ReplyDeleteMy aunt was 97 when she passed away. Her mom was 92. My mom was 88 1/2.
