Book Review: The Star Attraction

By Amy Bromberg

Sophie is a Hollywood publicist who has a fabulous job, a fabulous boyfriend, and a fabulous life. She even scores her PR firm's most important actor client and every woman's dream—Billy Fox.

But will a steamy make-out session in a restaurant alley with her big-name client cost Sophie her job? And does she really want an escape from her life and her loving, if imperfect, relationship with her investment banker boyfriend? The Star Attraction takes us on a wild ride through one woman's daytime soap come to life. (Synopsis courtesy of Amazon.com)

Alison Sweeney has played Samantha Brady on Days of Our Lives since 1984 (yes, I’m a big "Days" fan). That’s more than half of her life. That being said it’s pretty obvious that she knows how to tell a story, being around stories and dramas most of her life. Writers and authors are advised to write what they know right? Well that’s exactly what Alison does with The Star Attraction. Being in the Hollywood spotlight for many years and because of her best friend being a publicist she had that much more information to put into words.

Alison did a great job in creating Sophie. Many times she reminded me of Samantha Brady, being a klutz, G-d forbid admitting she was wrong, and making it out that she’s in control of everything, when in reality that’s the farthest thing from the truth. The story begins with Sophie being a bit full of herself (this is another classic Samantha Brady trait) but after making a few bad decisions, and listening to the devil as opposed to the angel on her shoulder, she goes on a personal journey of self-discovery.

Not sure what’s better…reading this book or reading through People magazine. Both are just so juicy! This is a great beach, escape and chick lit read! If you were like me, and kept on wanting more, see here how Alison is already working on her second novel during her Today Show interview.

Thanks to Hyperion for the book in exchange for an honest review.

  1. This is a great review, and if the read is anything like an afternoon with People Magazine, I'm sure it's worth the read. It's always interesting seeing an actor cross over into writing, and Alison probably has a great sense of drama from her experiences. Thanks!
