Book Review: Friendships Don't Just Happen

By Cindy Roesel

Friendships don’t just happen. We MAKE them happen. In relationships, we practice giving and receiving love and for that we are better people for this world. Founder Girlfriend and CEO of GirlfriendCircles.com, Shasta Nelson has written FRIENDSHIPS DON’T JUST HAPPEN: The Guide to Creating a Meaningful Circle of Girlfriends. Shasta’s manual is a proven step-by-step workbook filled with an inspiring call to action plan to help us create, maintain and enhance our friendships!

It’s for adventurous, smart ever-changing women who move to another city or change jobs or careers and find themselves friendless. Perhaps you’ve had a shift in your values or your relationships have broadened? FRIENDSHIPS DON’T JUST HAPPEN is a handbook to getting a group of four to six women together and seeing what happens. Of course, I must throw in my experience. I posted a meet-up time on the chalkboard, confirmed with three of them, and none showed up. But I did have a delicious piece of chocolate cake and a cappuccino. I actually really enjoyed talking to the barista, Eric. (He’s an English Literature Grad student.) It's nothing against the program; maybe the friendship with these women wasn't meant to happen.

Shasta Nelson is one of those women/girls who everyone loves, even if they went in with an attitude that they wouldn't. They can’t help it! She’s kind of like Katie Couric, perky with lots of teeth and you just WANT to be her friend. She’s even on the cover of this month’s issue of More. Shasta’s gig is share with everyone how to become girlfriends! The handbook will work unless you have enough friends or you’re not committed to following the steps.

However, for those of us who don’t have the need for a ca-zillion friends, there’s no reason to think there’s anything wrong with us. I personally like to be alone or with just one or two friends, after decades in newsrooms being over-stimulated by people screaming and scanners screaching. If you are fortunate enough to write alone most of your day, you are the lucky one. If you are not alone by choice and making friends is important to you, FRIENDSHIPS DON'T JUST HAPPEN is a useful guide...one that you'll want to keep with you at all times.

Thanks to Shasta for the book in exchange for an honest review. She's giving away some copies at her interview. (US only.)
