  1. The One That I Want is as much a romance as it is a sort of coming age for Gemma. She's been hanging on the sidelines for too long and her weight loss and new status as one of the best members of the majorette squad have been great for her self-esteem--she's been building up to her breaking point as far as Addison is concerned. The girls' friendship with Max and Carter creates plenty of drama, and there are some interesting parallels between the two sets of friends. Throughout the drama, Gemma does her best, and readers will be solidly on her side as she begins to realize what friendship is not, and that standing up for yourself can have some unexpected benefits and consequences. Anyone who has even gone through the angst of liking someone who may or may not reciprocate will empathize with Gemma, and her journey towards self-acceptance is universal. The One That I Want is a fun, romantic read with a good bit of drama, stolen kisses, and a great message about standing up to bullies--not to win a guy, but for yourself.
