This summer, from New York Times bestselling author Beth Harbison, comes an extraordinary story of self-discovery. In IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME. Beth Harbison employs her signature wit and warmth to tell the story of every woman who has ever thought, “if I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I’d do things so differently…”
Thirty-six year old Ramie Phillips has led a very successful life. She made her fortune and now she hob nobs with the very rich, and occasionally semi-famous, and enjoys luxuries she only dreamed of as a middle-class kid growing up in Maryland. But lately Ramie has begun to feel a bit…empty.
While partying on a boat with friends off the Florida coast, no one notices as Ramie gets up to go to the diving board. So no one notices when she hits her head on the board on her way down…
She wakes some time later with a throbbing headache and something beeping next to her. She strains to understand a voice calling in the distance: “Wake up!” It’s her mother. “You’re going to be late for school again. I’m not writing a note this time…”
An exploration of what life teaches us, and what we can learn from the past, IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME is the next hilarious and heartwarming novel from the beloved Beth Harbison.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a teenager my best friend and I had so much fun! We used to hang out with each other any time we were not in school (and sometimes when we were supposed to be in school but weren't - oops!). We would just talk about everything and nothing the way teenage girls do, go shopping, hunt boys, try out all the new purple eyeshadows to go with all our purple clothes. It was the 80s!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing good that I can remember from back then is I survived when the stupid things I did should have done me in.
ReplyDeleteBest memory would have to be the day I met my "husband to be".. I was only 14, and was not allowed to date yet. So Sean and I talked on the phone (no texting here, baby!) , we talked daily! Really got to know each other. About 3 months after that first initial meeting and daily talking, I ran into him at the mall, and did not know who he was! LOL Well, 40 years later, we have been married 33 years!!! xoxobeth

ReplyDeleteOne summer my teacher asked me to be her assistant and I loved it. I didn't become a teacher myself, but cherish the memories I had helping other students ;)
ReplyDeleteI liked the volunteer activities I did as a teenager. I walked with an elderly woman around her block several times a week. I worked as a candy striper in a hospital weekly. I read to a blind man and retyped a manuscript he was working on. I shelved books at a library and was hired later as an assistant to the librarian--all those books I was exposed to. :) I think the job title was library clerk. This was before the cut-backs. Good times.

ReplyDeleteIn Holland, MI there is a festival every year called Tulip Time when we celebrate the Dutch people who founded Holland, MI as well as the surrounding communities. It happens each year the first or second week in May when the tulips (flowers the settlers brought from the Netherlands) are supposed to bloom - years when it gets warm early, the tulips bloom early and we have what the natives call a "Stem Fest". Anyway, it is a huge festival where people come from all over the world. A large part of this festival are the Dutch Dancers. In high school we have the chance to dress up in authentic Dutch costumes and dance an authentic Dutch dance. It takes a lot of work, time, and energy, but it was so much fun! We got to dance each night around an area park (an amazing sight to see hundreds of us dancing in unison all around the park!), as well as several other times throughout the city for the entire week, and be a part of each of 3 huge parades. My senior year, I was a Dutch Dancer, a member of a marching band, and a member of a performing jazz band. It was the craziest, most exhausting, most exhilarating, most fun time I had in high school.
ReplyDeleteHanging out at the lake with my friends.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are several, but the one thing I can remember is making the varsity volleyball team as a freshman in high school. I was pretty excited. Played all four years!!
ReplyDeleteHanging out on the beach in Malibu all summer watching the cute surfers.
ReplyDeleteSo I wasn't a huge fan of high school in general (is anyone? lol) but I had a fun time hanging out with friends and doing orchestra and swim team for 4 years. Lots of fond memories of those years.

ReplyDeleteEverything! The music, the movies. Freedom, youth and energy! Although I was a bit scared of everything, too. That wasn't cool.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing from when I was a teenager was my mom letting me have my girlfriends sleep over EVERY weekend. Literally, my place was the place to be! Where you could be yourself, act silly, not get into trouble, eat all the junk food you wanted. I'm so grateful for that time in my life and almost 10+ years, I'm still friends with those girls. :D
ReplyDeleteTrip back home (Hong Kong) to visit my family and friends
ReplyDeleteBeing on the pom squad (I was a captain my senior year!), going to the football and basketball games, and mostly spending lots of time with my friends!
ReplyDeleteIn an effort to combat my shyness, I took public speaking as an elective and wound up loving it. While I didn't excel in competition, I participated enough that I was selected by the instructor to accompany the two classmates who did qualify for the state competition. We had a blast!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a teenager I met and became friends with two girls who are still my best friends today. I don't know what I would do without them!
